Abstract

Since the discovery of the DNA structure researchers have been highly interested in the molecular basis of genome inheritance. This book covers a wide range of aspects and issues related to the field of DNA replication. The association between genome replication, repair and recombination is also addressed, as well as summaries of recent work of the replication cycles of prokaryotic and eukaryotic viruses. The reader will gain an overview of our current understanding of DNA replication and related cellular processes, and useful resources for further reading.

Abstract

Model plants are required for research when targeted plant species are difficult to study or when research material is unavailable. Importantly, knowledge gained from model plants can be generally translated to other related plant species because many key cellular and molecular processes are conserved and regulated by 'blueprint' genes inherited from a common ancestor. Model Organisms in Plant Genetics addresses characteristics of model plants such as Arabidopsis, moss, soybean, maize, and cotton, highlighting their advantages and limitations as well as their importance in studies of plant development, plant genome polyploidization, adaptive selection, evolution, and domestication, as well as their importance in crop improvement.

Abstract

The book collects the works presented during the XII meeting of the Italian Group of Evolutionary Biology, held in Florence in February 2004. Evolutionary theories are illustrated with balance from different points of view (from the perspective of historians, zoologists, paleontologists, anthropologists, molecular biologists) in the light of some recent experimental and theoretical discoveries. The debate and the diversity of investigations demonstrate the validity and relevance of the study of biological evolution.

Abstract

"Available Open Access under CC-BY-NC licence. The public and parliamentary debate about UK abortion law is often diverted away from key moral and political questions by disputes regarding basic questions of fact. And all too often, claims of scientific 'fact' are ideologically driven. With each chapter written by leading experts in the fields of medicine, law, reproductive health and social science, this book offers a concise and authoritative account of the evidence regarding the likely impact of decriminalisation. Examining specific yet diverse regional and local contexts across Europe, this book uses original research to evaluate differences in scope, approach, orientation, and objectives. It examines the embedding of LLL policies into the regional economy, the labour market, education and training systems and the individual life projects of young people, with a focus on those in situations of near social exclusion."

Abstract

Personalized medicine is playing an important role in cancer prevention. To date, it is clear that many cancers are molecularly distinct subtypes, and different therapeutic approaches would be required for each. This Special Issue brings together original research and review articles on molecular oncology with attention to the early detection and prevention of cancer. It highlights new findings, methods, and technical advances in molecular cancer research. The main feature of this reprint was to provide an open-source sharing of significant works in the field of molecular oncology that can increase our understanding of cancer development. Topics include: Molecular methods to personalize cancer screening and detection; Molecular target therapies to prevent cancer development and metastases; Identification and new aspects of cellular signaling molecules and pathways for target discovery, drug design and personalized and gender medicine; Drug repurposing for cancer prevention; Molecular modeling studies.

Abstract

This volume is a collection of contributions of a Florentine post congress symposium on "Primate Cytogenetics and Comparative Genomics" held on occasion of the XX International Primatological Congress (Turin in 2004). Comparative Molecular Cytogenetics and Genomics are two rapidly expanding fields. Researchers from Italy, Germany, Spain, United States and Japan meet in Florence to discuss over a two day period recent advances and summarize the current state of the science.

Abstract

DNA is the most important biomolecule ever discovered. Indeed, this molecule bears genetic information from one generation to another. In this regard, DNA bases have a key role in transferring genetic information and data safely. However, there are cellular, genetic, and environmental factors that may damage the different parts of DNA molecules. These damages may result in mutations and cell death. As such, several DNA repair mechanisms have evolved. Over three sections, this book examines many of these mechanisms.

Abstract

Transcriptome analysis is the study of the transcriptome, of the complete set of RNA transcripts that are produced under specific circumstances, using high-throughput methods. Transcription profiling, which follows total changes in the behavior of a cell, is used throughout diverse areas of biomedical research, including diagnosis of disease, biomarker discovery, risk assessment of new drugs or environmental chemicals, etc. Transcriptome analysis is most commonly used to compare specific pairs of samples, for example, tumor tissue versus its healthy counterpart. In this volume, Dr. Pyo Hong discusses the role of long RNA sequences in transcriptome analysis, Dr. Shinichi describes the next-generation single-cell sequencing technology developed by his team, Dr. Prasanta presents transcriptome analysis applied to rice under various environmental factors, Dr. Xiangyuan addresses the reproductive systems of flowering plants and Dr. Sadovsky compares codon usage in conifers.

Abstract

Next generation sequencing (NGS) has surpassed the traditional Sanger sequencing method to become the main choice for large-scale, genome-wide sequencing studies with ultra-high-throughput production and a huge reduction in costs. The NGS technologies have had enormous impact on the studies of structural and functional genomics in all the life sciences. In this book, Next Generation Sequencing Advances, Applications and Challenges, the sixteen chapters written by experts cover various aspects of NGS including genomics, transcriptomics and methylomics, the sequencing platforms, and the bioinformatics challenges in processing and analysing huge amounts of sequencing data. Following an overview of the evolution of NGS in the brave new world of omics, the book examines the advances and challenges of NGS applications in basic and applied research on microorganisms, agricultural plants and humans. This book is of value to all who are interested in DNA sequencing and bioinformatics across all fields of the life sciences.
